Essential features of different months
General information on bears.
Bears are extremely shy, absolute silence in the hides is required. The bears are used to the sounds of cameras. There are usually several different bears in the area. In 2008 as many as 9 bears were seen simultaneously. Altogether 25 different bears were seen during the season. The probability to see a bear is 98%.
The bears move around the area from evening till morning, and are easy to photograph. The length of photographing time varies in different months. The distances of photographing start from three meters.
APRIL
Mid April Sunrise 04.40 Sunset 21.00 The first bears come to the site in the end of March, when the snow cover can be one metre deep. At nights the temperature drops below zero. Weather conditions can change rapidly from snowing to sunshine. Th ere is plenty of snow until the end of the month, and the pond is frozen over until May. Wolverine moves around actively in April.
MAY Mid May Sunrise 02:50 Sunset 21:38 In the beginning of the month there is usually still some snow, and snowing is not rare, either. Th e pond melts halfway through the month. The one-year-old cubs come to the site in May. Rutting season of the bears begins in the end of the month. The scenery starts to turn green.
JUNE Mid June Sunrise 01:20 Sunset 23:17 The scenery is green. The rutting season lasts till the end of the month, and the mating bears can be photographed starting at the end of the month. The nights are light and it is possible to photograph almost through the night. Cotton grass turns the scenery white in some places. Sunset and sunrise give great tones for photographing.
JULY Mid July Sunrise 02:18 Sunset 22:30 The nights are light and it is possible to photograph almost through the night. Sunset and sunrise give great tones for photographing. Mist starts forming, softening the scenery. The scenery is green and lush.
AUGUST Mid August Sunrise 04:05 Sunset 20:40 The scenery is green and lush. Sunset and sunrise give great tones for photographing. The bears stay at the site longer periods towards autumn, as they need nourishment for the winter. Mist and fog soften the scenery.
SEPTEMBER
Mid September Sunrise 05:41 Sunset 18:45 The female bears dare bring their one-year-old cubs to the site for the first time. The cubs often climb the trees. The bears come to the site often as early as afternoons and stay until the morning. The autumn mist and fog soften the scenery. The autumn colours are to be seen everywhere in the scenery. In the end of the month there may be frosty mornings and you can see the bears’ breath steam in the cold.
